Decisions issued by the unemployment fund

The unemployment fund issues written decisions on benefits, membership and recovery matters

The unemployment fund will issue a written decision on your benefit application in the following situations:

  • you are applying for an unemployment allowance for the first time or it has been a long time since your last application
  • the amount of your unemployment allowance changes (except for example a simple index-linked increase)
  • the unemployment allowance cannot be paid for the period applied for (for example, because of a rejected labour policy statement, a mandatory waiting period or a high amount of income to be taken into account in the adjustment)
  • your unemployment allowance has previously been suspended and your entitlement to it is restored.

The decision to grant a benefit is usually issued for an indefinite period of time and is valid as long as the conditions for receiving the benefit are met. However, a decision may also be issued for a limited period if it is foreseeable that the benefit will cease to be paid or its amount will change. If you are employed part-time and apply for an adjusted unemployment allowance, you will usually receive a decision for each period of adjustment separately.

Please remember to inform Sotekassa of any changes in your situation.

The unemployment fund also issues decisions on membership and recovery matters. In membership matters, a decision is issued if an application for membership is rejected or membership is terminated, for example for non-payment of membership fees or for more than 18 months of full-time entrepreneurial activity. A written decision on the acceptance of a membership application will only be given on request.

You will receive a decision once the fund has processed your application, recovery or membership case. The unemployment fund does not issue advance decisions.

If you are unhappy with the decision you have received, you can appeal against it. Learn more about appeals.

Sotekassa decisions are delivered to the eService

We have moved to electronic communication. Decisions issued by the unemployment fund are primarily delivered electronically to the eService.

If you do not open the decision in the eService within 7 days, the decision will automatically be sent to you by post.

In the Messages and letters > Communication settings section of the eService, you can choose how you would like to receive notifications about decisions arriving in the eService. Notifications of new decisions can be sent either by email or by text message.
