Join the unemployment fund and protect yourself against unemployment
We recommend joining Sotekassa even if you are still a student. As a member of the fund, you can accumulate work history that counts towards your unemployment benefit through summer jobs and any paid work you do alongside your studies. This means that if you become unemployed after graduation or later in your career, you may be eligible for an earnings-related unemployment allowance that is higher than the basic Kela benefit. The fund also offers employment support services that can help you if you are looking for a job during your studies.
Who can become a member of Sotekassa?
Are you studying for a degree in healthcare, social services, education or rehabilitation? Or do you already have a degree in one of the above fields? If you answered yes to at least one of the above questions, you can join Sotekassa.
If you are not sure whether the degree you are studying for fulfils the requirements for membership of Sotekassa, send us a message!
What to take into consideration when joining?
To become a member of the fund, you must apply for membership in writing. Membership also requires you to be in paid employment.
- Join the fund as soon as you start paid work, so that you accumulate unemployment benefits for as long as possible. All paid work, also part-time work, accumulates work history as long as you are paid at least 465 euros per month (gross) . The work does not have to be in the social or health sector. To become a member, you only need to be in paid employment in any sector for at least one day.
- You can apply for membership before you start work, but not retroactively. Membership of the fund can start at the earliest from the date on which your application for membership is received by the unemployment fund. If you apply to join the unemployment fund before you start work, your membership can start on your first day of work. Membership of the fund cannot become valid retroactively. If your job has ended when your membership application reaches the fund, the earliest your membership can start is when you start your next job.
- There is no minimum age for joining the unemployment fund, but work done before the age of 18 does not count towards unemployment benefits. Therefore, membership in the unemployment fund becomes beneficial only after turning 18.
- Once you have been accepted as a member, your membership will remain valid even when you are not employed. To remain a member, you must pay your membership fee in accordance with the instructions you receive. We recommend continuing your membership at all times so that you do not lose the work history you have accumulated in the past.
